GERMAN-SPEAKING SETTLERS IN GEORGIA, 1733-1741
(BASED ON THE EARL OF EGMONTS LIST) *
By GEORGE FENWICK JONES
John Percival, who became the Earl of Egmont in 1733, was a man of wealth,
political influence, and charitable leanings who was greatly concerned about both
the downtrodden in England and the oppressed Protestants of Europe. Seeing a
chance to help both these groups through the proposed founding of the colony of
Georgia, he threw all his considerable energy into this benevolent project and
became the President of the Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in
America. As Robert G. McPherson states, Egmont was "a careful record keeper
and a copious writer";¹ and to him we owe much of our knowledge of early life
in Georgia. Egmont struggled manfully to extract information from the officials
in Georgia, who, in their general confusion and sickness, found little time or in-
centive to submit the requested reports. Despite such difficulties, Egmont kept,
as best he could, a current record of all settlers who went to Georgia, to which he
gave the title "A List of Persons Who Went from Europe to Georgia on Their
own Account, or at the Trustees' Charge, who Joyned the Colony or were born in
It, Distinguishing Such as had Grants there or were only Inmates." ²
Egmont's list gives, as far as he was able to obtain it, information on the set-
tler's age, occupation,³ date of embarcation,
4
date of arrival, and whether he died,
left, or moved away. The names appear in two parallel and roughly alphabetical
lists, one listing those who came at their own expense and one listing those whose
passage was paid for by the Trustees, either free as in the case of the Saltzburgers,
or to be repaid by indentured service as in the case of the "Palatines."
The following list of German names is extracted from a computerized listing
of all Egmont's names made for a previous purpose. Egmont used the words
"German" and "Palatine" almost interchangeably and classified all inhabitants
of Ebenezer as Saltzburgers even if they were actually Swiss like Zant and the
Zublis, Silesian like George Sanftleben, or Bavarian like the Roths. On the other
hand, many individuals listed as Palatines soon became "Salzburgers" by mov-
ing to Ebenezer.
Sometimes Egmont gives variant or phonetic spellings, such as Rasch for
Resch, Reuter for Reiter, and Roner for Rauner; but some names are distorted
by misreading, as in the case of Leshoffer for Leihoffer, Schefter for Schefler,
and Haismere for Kaesemeyer. Kimlin should be Künlin, whereas the in in
Khredelin is merely the feminine ending, the correct name being Kreder. Despite
these and many more discrepancies, Egmont's list is valuable, because many
garbled family names, when reinforced by the pertinent Christian names, can be
confirmed and corrected by other sources:
5
for example, Michel Burgholder is
[35]
clearly Michael Burckhalter of Vernonburg, who signed a letter thanking the
Trustees for giving him the service of a Palatine woman and her children.
6
The nine columns on the following list give: I, name; II, an arbitrary identity
number; III, birth year (derived from age at date of arrival); IV, year, month,
and day of arrival; V, nationality; VI, profession; VII and VIII, relationship of
individual to persons with given identity number; and IX, departure through
death (d) or moving away (m) in the few cases recorded by Egmont.
Other abbreviations are: for NATIONALITY, Georgia, German, Jew,
Moravian (Herrnhuter), Palatine, Salzburger, Swiss; for RELATIONSHIPS,
bastard,
boy, brother,
child, daughter, father, husband,
ml (mother-in-law),
minor, mother, nephew, niece, sister, son,
sl (son-in-law), spinster, sw (single
woman), ts (twin sister), uncle, ww (widow), wife; for PROFESSIONS, appren-
tice, blacksmith, brazier, brewer, bricklayer, butcher, carpenter, cook, drummer,
dyer, farmer, fisherman, gardner, gentleman, glasier, huntsman, husbandryman,
joyner, laborer, locksmith, mason, miller, millwright, miner, minister, physician,
ropemaker, saltpeterman, schoolmaster, scrivener, servant, shoemaker, smith,
stocking weaver, surgeon, tailor, tanner, tinker, watchman, weaver, wood cutter.

The Journal of the Earl of Egmont, ed. Robert G. McPherson (Athens, Ga.: U. of Ga. Press, 1962), p. xi.
2
This manuscript, apparently in Egmont's own hand, is among the Egmont papers of the University of
Georgia Libraries (serial no. 1422), which were so kind as to provide me with a photocopy.   Egmont's list has
been published in a somewhat different form as A List of the Early Settlers of Georgia, ed. E. Merton Coulter
and Albert B. Saye (Athens, Ga.: U. of Ga. Press, 1949).
3
Because the family farms in Southwestern Germany had become so small through division, nearly every
farm boy had to learn a trade in addition to farming. Unfortunately, few of them were able to profit from
these skills in Georgia, where only their brawn was needed and nearly all became field hands.
4
The date of embarkation, usually that from England, is omitted on this list to save space.
5
The correct names of the Salzburgers can be found in the Detailed Reports on the Georgia Salzburgers,
ed. George F. Jones (Athens, Ga.: U. of Ga. Press, 1968 ff.), especially in Vol. VI (1981), pp. 328-328. Some
of the Palatines, and their disposition, can be found ibid., pp. 329-334. The most authentic list of the Mo-
ravians is in Adelaide L. Fries, The Morvians in Georgia, 1735-1740 (Raleigh, N.C., 1905). Nearly all these
German names appear passim in a myriad of spellings in The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, ed. Allen
D. Chandler (Atlanta, 1904-1916). Those volumes not previously published are now being edited by Kenneth
Coleman and Milton Ready (Athens, Ga.: U. of Ga. Press, 1977 ff.).
6
Michel Burckhalter to the Trustees (Public Record Office, CO 5/642, p. 5). Although the family is not
named, it is clearly that of John Adam Treutlen, the first elected governor of Georgia.
